Pittsburgh, 1901. The wife of a Pittsburgh prison warden, Kate Soffel (Diane Keaton) visits inmates to read Bible scripture to them. She meets Ed Biddle (Mel Gibson) and his brother Jack (Matthew Modine), both of whom may be innocent of the crimes that brought them there. Kate falls in love with Ed and decides to help him and Jack escape.
