Although his wife is about to give birth to their first child, Miguel, a fisherman who is active in his coastal village’s community and church, carries on a secret affair with Santiago, a young painter. Miguel makes every effort to conceal the affair, but shortly after the two lovers have an argument, Santiago accidentally drowns. Santiago’s ghost appears to Miguel to ask him to recover his body so he can have a traditional burial. However, when clues to their affair are found in the painter’s house, Miguel suffers from the stigma his secret carries as he experiences humiliation within his community. More importantly, he has to deal with the hurt he’s caused his wife.
